SIGNAL BOOOOOOST
I got overwhelmingly positive feedback for the proposed larger size, so I’m going to officially change it.
The new final size for art will be 7.5 x 10.5 inches, portrait orientation with 1/4 inch bleed (final-final piece size would look more like 8 x 11” with bleed).
Submit final complete digital and traditional works 300dpi. Smaller works of the same ratio can be sent in as well; smaller traditional works ought to be scanned in at 600(+) dpi for best quality when resizing.

OKAY so this would be the technique I’d use to resize smaller images (for those who have started work on a smaller size). For this example, I’m using a small book of black and white illustrations as my source. Each page is about 4x6”. I wanted to resize this the same prospective amount for our book, 150%.
It’s a really easy process. The original image, in our case a digital printout at actual size, is scanned at a high dpi (600 dpi here). Then that scan is basically digitally resized 150% and we have the final print.
This process works because the scanner is taking in more data with the higher setting, thus creating a larger file. Since more information has been digitized from the source, the computer doesn’t have to “make up” the details as much when the size is increased (those jaggies in the top image on the left).
A special note, since the source image is on cream paper, the scanner picks up the paper’s tone and pattern (i did the original scan in rgb, i didn’t really bother to change the settings since this is just illustrating the less lossy size increase quality). This was also printed on one of the admin/company document printers which, as you can see isn’t very tight, but it still illustrates the point I’m making (the loose dot pattern is on the actual size print as well, it’s not actual artifacts).
What I’m getting at here is this shouldn’t be as much of a problem as I make it seem! Digital work doesn’t have to be upscaled by you, and traditional art can be scanned and sent at 600 dpi.
I’d like to hear what you all think of this, in regards to sizing up the book! How does this change your opinion on the matter? Does this still negatively impact your work or ideas? Questions and comments in the usual; ask box and email!
Again, thanks for all the input so far. I’ll finalize the size (5x7”, or 7.5x10.5”) within the next 48 hours, so consider the pros and cons of your own personal situation, I’ll heed anyone who might be unable to accomodate this. I apologize for any inconvenience/heart attacks, please continue to send your thoughts!
HUGE DORK AND WILD HARE THOUGHTS. ALL PROSPECTIVE AND CURRENT CONTRIBUTORS, PLEASE READ:
On the left is my initial intended 5 x 7” size, and on the right is an 7.5 x 10.5”, overlaid by my relatively average-sized human hand.
Now my question to all you is: how many of you are interested in a larger format? and more importantly, how many have already started working on something intended for a smaller size?
The issues with this are primarily to do with resizing work to the larger scale, but it’s possible to do without sacrificing quality (basic process is printing the image at the completed size, scanning it at a higher dpi and viola). The ratio of the 7.5 x 10.5” is the same at a 150% increase, thus any compositional vs. aspect elements should be unchanged, if I did my math right.
Now I know this is really late considering this all started…a little over 3 months ago BUT since the start of this project and especially recently, this little book has garnered much more attention than I initially anticipated! I think that given what will be a pretty sweet collection of quality work, I think that there is benefit in considering and asking you all about a larger print size. (I do think that the extra work on my end would be worth a larger book, for those of you who are already working on/completed art.)
BUT I’D ALSO LIKE TO KNOW JUST HOW THIS PROPOSITION COMPLETELY SCREWS EVERYONE UP. Please tell me I’m a loser and and idiot in the ask box or email me (at cruiserdynamo @ gmail . com) for even considering ASKING YOU ALL SUCH A QUESTION. Basically, if prospective and current contributors hate this idea, I won’t do it, but I’d just like to lay these personal concerns to rest…(better late than never kill me now)
I’ll contact those who have alerted me to their desires to contribute from the Interest Survey via a separate ask account by the name of “cruiserdynamo-asksyou”, just to make double sure those who would like to, or are contributing, can consider this possible change individually.
Thank you for your patience! I’ve been writing novels here mostly haha…forgive me.
I was thinking about the size requirements the whole time I was writing, but I think I can say that something larger will probably benefit me as I’m going to have a tough enough time editing my script down to 8 pages. xD
That is if I don’t go with another idea I have that’s already fleshed out and agghhhh
ANYWAYS LARGER IS COOL
Though there’s just something charming about 5x7”…
yeah, I’m aware people are thinking in 5x7, but I never really considered how dialogue text in comics would be handled!! Even credit text would be difficult to read if each section devoted to an artist’s contact and all that were laid out in any logical fashion…
my reason for even mentioning all this is to get rid of this “what if…” feeling I have. If anyone is ruined by this, I’ll stick to the original 5x7, but 7.5 x 10.5 should still be the same ratio, so those submitting individual pieces shouldn’t end up too destroyed by my floundering…

BEAR IN MIND THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL CHANGE YET. I will make a notification in a few days based on feedback whether or not the size will be increased.
I’m almost finished with the pencils of an internal image of my own! For whatever reason I wanted to draw on mylar, but it smears like crazy, so i have to lightbox this onto a piece of paper to fill in all the corners with junk and the small bits in that keep getting smudged….(help me)
I was kinda thinking it would be cool if robos took some kind of meditative stance or mode to connect to satellites and the internet (cumbersome and illogical!?) This has basically turned into techno-sorcery.
:edit:
i forgot this isn’t technically anywhere near a 5 x 7 ratio, Im gonna have to crop a bunch of stuff off the sides unfortunately…maybe I’ll make color prints of this full-size?

For any new visitors who might have caught wind of CRUISER DYNAMO either by me directly speaking to you, or picking up a few cards around the convention center, THANKS FOR LOOKING! and thank you for hearing me out!
Cruiser Dynamo will be a physical art book that will be published in the Autumn of 2013. The primary focus of this project is to collect art and comics with a strict emphasis on original content and design all centered around robots! Listed below is more information all in one place for new-comers!
what a show…the Denver Comic Convention was my first ever actual con-anything…I didn’t intend on going at the start of May, but changed my mind essentially on Friday, and I’m glad for it. There are a ton of great artists exhibiting their work, and I’m so glad I got to talk to so many of them(you?) on an individual level. If I talked to you personally, I apologize for my shyness and quiet voice! u///u If I met with you, email me and tell me who you are or something, I’d love to get to know you all better! (It’s so loud and busy at the con, and difficult to talk in depth in such an energetic atmosphere…)

There’s a few other answered asks floating on this blog, but the backlog isn’t anything overwhelming, I assure you. Have a look around!
As always, feel free to contact me through this blog or email (cruiserdynamo [at] gmail [dot] com) me for any questions, clarification, comments or suggestions you might have! I’m happy to answer all of them!
Yes yes! I’ll be accepting work til August 31. Check out the submission guidelines somewhere on the right over there in the sidebar! I’m happy to answer any further questions!
Ohhhh lil info cards to pass out at the Denver Comic Con tomorrow!
We have a bunch of grab bag papers, found some 4 year old metallic pink stock! I couldn’t think of anything cool to draw last night, so it’s robos beating on eachothers heads…
so I was talking to my uncle about old Heavy Metal mags and Moebius, and french comics, and surreal psych-rock and metal album covers of ages past and…ahhh cover design is such a difficult but EXCITING THING.
I AM SO EXCITED YOU GUYS. I STILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IM GONNA DO.
Hey everyone!
I’ve been thinking about pre-order print funding and print extras… Here in the shop, we also specialize in fine art gicleé prints and I’m wondering…if anyone would be interested in doing full color work for print offering like that? I can’t pay with cash-money, but I can do a similar offering for artists as with the free books, and send those who would make such an art sacrifice some free prints to sell on their own! I’d like to offer some such work of my own for sale in print, but I’d like to see variety!
As far as my involvement in selling prints of your work, they would probably only be available from me for a limited pre-order time frame as extra incentive for such funding.
For those who’d like to know, a giclee print is an archival quality fine art print. We’ve got a lot of paper variety too, if anyone interested in seeing samples I can mail some little paper squares so you can have a say in the appearance of your prints texture-wise if you wanted something glossy or watercolor type etc…
I’m looking for about 5-10 pieces for this offering. This art is eligible for b&w reprinting within the anthology itself if you like, and can crop it to fit in the 5x7 size. THAT’S NOT TO SAY YOUR WORK HAS TO BE THAT RATIO IN THIS CASE. you can choose your dimensions for your work. My only size requirement would be to keep the height or width below a certain length…I’ll come back to y’all on the max size (prolly max 18 or 20 ish).
If you’re interested in smaller print things like post cards or bookmarks we can do those too!
As always minimum dpi for this stuff is 300, and full color.
I have some ideas about pricing and other details like that, if anyone is interested and would like to talk concept or if you have any questions, email me at cruiserdynamo at gmail dot com!
Hey everyone!
I’d like to try and get an idea of the number of prospective participants! Would you kindly “like” this post if you’re interested in submitting work? I want to be able to differentiate between those who would like to contribute, and those who are interested in the progress of the book.
Please only “like” this post if you’re interested in submitting, so I can get a more accurate picture of what to expect! As always reblogs are encouraged and appreciated, I’ll reblog this for other crowds too. I’ll count the “likes” and omit any reblogs for analysis.
Thank you for your assistance!
